This little piggy

My hair has not been long enough to 'put up' since about 2000 and I'm fine with that because I love my short-ish hair. And when something had to be done to it to make it look a little more special, my amazing hair dressing friend Cathy Jo pulled off a miracle. She's basically a hair genius...seriously. If hair was a language, she'd be fluent.

Now, the only drawback to short hair is when you're desiring to get that hair the heck off your neck when it's a hot day out like today was. But recently I had a hair breakthrough of sorts. I'm changing styles a bit so I didn't get it all hacked off this summer...Cathy Jo has started another hair miracle. So sometime in the past month I tried putting my hair in a ponytail. Yeah, we all know that didn't happen. But my hair breakthrough occurred when I tried out the ponytail's less sophisticated cousin, the pigtails, and-behold!-it worked!

I was wearing pigtails today and thought about how they could never really attain the potentially 'sophisticated' label that ponytails can aspire to be but are forever religated to the realm of 'cute'. I also thought, "well at least complete strangers and random people I see will know how much fun I am because I am pulling off these pigtails". Armed with this knowledge I walked in and out of Starbucks, getting my Passion tea before heading to work, with confidence that my pigtails were 'fun'! But it was on my way to work that I thought maybe my hair should never convey to perfect strangers and random people that I am 'fun'. It might be able to convey other things but if your hair says 'fun' it just sounds like you're in deep hair trouble. Or maybe this very ranting has demonstrated to you all the perverse affect the heat had on my brain today, analysing pigtails so deeply.

In any case, when the weather is hot and hair on the back of my neck is annoying me-as much as that guy who would sit next to me and loudly chew his nails in Psych 405: Personhood did-I will wear my pigtails with confidence, not caring what they do or do not convey to the world about me. My name is Lindsey and I wear pigtails.

Lindsey, I really want to use your June blog entry, This Little Piggy, as an article in my eZine, Pigtail Dreams Magazine. May I? Email me at alan@pigtaildreams.com.
